Rocche del Crasto
Impressive rocky formations of calcareous origin dating back to the Mesozoic period Rocche del Crasto can be found in the territory of Alcara Li Fusi and S. Marco d’Alunzio. This rocky formation of white limestone of dolomite origins and crystalline rocks, in spring time offers a wide range of flowers, colours and perfumes. This is an extraordinarily important place where famous predators such us birds of prey and above all griffons and the golden eagle make their own nests. The path along its pink dolomitic walls leads to the peak of this rocky formation where there are the ruins of an ancient fortified centre, probably Krastos, which was populated by Sicani. The importance of this place is due also to the presence of stalactites and stalagmites and to Grotta del Lauro. Tourists can reach this place through a path of three-kilometres which from Alcara Li Fusi leads to Portella Gazzana; if they go on and for another kilometre they get to a tortuous and uneven lane. From the peaks of the rocks on great valleys, there’s a boundless landscape of rare and inexplicable charm, in front of the beautiful vision of the sea and of the Aeolian Islands.
